About Kettlebells
You may ask, “What the hell is a kettlebell?”
It’s basically a cannon ball with a handle and has also been described as a home gym in one. It’s a training tool that’s used extensively in the armed forces, high profile sports teams, mixed martial arts to name a few. Kettlebells have been given a lot of press recently and is now been promoted to the general exercise enthusiast for good reason.
So why use a kettlebell over a standard dumbbell?
This is a very reasonable question and to be honest many of the kettlebell exercises can be performed using dumbbells. However it’s the unique shape of the kettlebell and it’s centre of gravity that makes it so much more versatile than your stock standard dumbbell. The handle sits above the weight, rather than in the middle, which allows you to execute the exercises more dynamically and efficiently.
Kettlebells can be used to target specific muscle groups also known as isolation exercises in which most weight bearing exercises programs are structured. However it’s the compound exercises where kettlebell training really shines recruiting multiple muscle groups in a single exercise. The ballistic nature of the core kettlebell exercises and the recruitment of large muscle groups send your metabolic rate (metabolism) through the roof and it’s not uncommon for people to be burning calories up to 72 hours after a kettlebell workout.
Are kettlebells for me?
Absolutely!! With a well structured kettlebell program virtually all fitness goals can be met and reached rapidly. I use kettlebells extensively in my personal training and I get fantastic results with both male and female clients who often have very different fitness goals. In the beginning my female clients are reluctant to use kettles in fear of putting on muscle mass, however with a little conversation and a little practise those misconceptions are laid to rest and the results speak for themselves.
Is it a silver bullet?
It’s not, however it goes very close to being one. At the end of the day Kettlebells are a weight, a tool similar to any that you might find in your local gym. However what really gets the results is a well structured program. Kettlebells and the other training tools I use such as boxing and interval training complement each other perfectly and it’s the mix of these tools and most importantly the implementation that really counts.
